I feel compelled to write about a visit from a constituent to my surgery last Tuesday at the Eastham Library and One Stop Shop. He came in to complain about why Wirral Council were so utterly useless and could not keep services running etc etc etc.
It was his opinion that, “We Conservative Local Government” were not fit for purpose and were only feathering our own nests with public money, until I pointed out that:-
1/ I was actually a LibDem councillor and Eastham has had LibDem Councillors for about the last 35 years. (pointing to the big yellow sign)
2/ Wirral Council is run by a 100% Labour administration.
He then proceeded to tell me that he has “always voted Labour as they were good in the 1930’s.”
This Gentleman has run a prominent local business in my ward for years and is now retired, and it does make me wonder how much harder we have to work to get the message across that we are now in the year 2016 and the political parties are not the same as they were back then.
I also had to point out, when he told me that we were as useless then as were are now, that the LibDem’s did not exist in the 1930’s.
It is this kind of tribalism and blind allegiance to something that no longer exists which, in my view, is killing democracy and allowing a few to lead and hoodwink the many.
