I went along to my first Wirral based meeting last night. I had no idea where I was going or what to expect, but I went along to see what it was all about and to see if I could help with anything in the local area. After all, that’s what I joined the party for. As usual I was early. I walked into the Wirral Lib Dems social club and was greeted with a bar, after a few minutes a lady appeared who looked just about some lost as I did, but knew the building from previous visits. She seemed to know where she was going, so I followed her up the stairs.
When I went into the room, there were a few people already there. I was welcomed with such a warm and friendly welcome, all apprehensions I had about going to this kind of meeting simply melted away in a moment of ‘Hello and welcome, so nice to have you here’. The welcomes were short due to more people arriving. I took a seat and waited for others to arrive.
The meeting got under way with a short agenda. The agenda, even though short, proved to be a melting pot of talking points, opinions and questions. I remained quiet during most of the meeting, as I didn’t feel I had enough experience to join in. As the meeting when on everyone was invited to have an input no matter their experience and length of service. It was an absolute eye opener of a meeting and absolutely fascinating. It was so nice to see a room of people, where they were all willing to work together for the good of the local area. Even when people had differences of opinion, no one was chastised or belittled for their opinions.
After the meeting, those who wanted to or could met in the bar downstairs. Conversations continued, about anything and everything, from what was discussed upstairs to everyday life. I can honestly say I have never been made to feel so welcome by a group of people in my life. I feel part of the Wirral Liberal Democrats and it doesn’t matter that I’ve only been a member since June. Everyone is so welcoming, friendly and respectful. After being part of this meeting I have been filled with so much enthusiasm and willingness to get involved. If we all pull together we can achieve the best for our local communities. Every change starts with one step, and I feel I have taken that first step. I am looking forward to the longer journey.
